Sermon on the Mount: Narrow and Wide Gates

Matthew 7:21-29

So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

Reflection

Despite the trend to believe that God will forgive us no matter what we do, God expects obedience from His children. God forgives our sins when we accept Jesus and repent. Repentance is required to reconcile with God. Christians that do not know the Word habitually perform in ways that cannot please the Father. Jesus warned us that many will enter the wide gates. Wordly things like lust, fornication, and greed lead us through the wide gates and into hell. Loving the laws of the Lord and allowing Him to transform us into His creation means not many people will make it into the narrow gates. Repenting is not legalism. We will all continue to sin, but it shouldn’t be done with purposeful planning and consistency. The lack of repentance puts into question that the Holy Spirit actually resides in you.

Have you considered how your daily life reveals which gate you are entering? Do you catch yourself committing the same sins on a regular basis but you don’t feel convicted of having displeased God? Do you want to know if your heart is in the right place where it truly loves the Lord and wants to do His will?
