Parable Series: Ten Men with Leprosy

Luke 17:10-19

Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance 13 and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!”

When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed.

One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan.

Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”

Reflection

Jesus healed ten lepers but only one returned to give thanks. This parable is not about judging the other nine that continued on, but is perfect for helping us view where we stand with God in our lives today. Are we the one thankful cured man, or the forgetful other nine? Do you give thanks and praise to the Lord for every good deed that happens to you, whether big or small? For finding parking in a crowded lot or for complete healing from the flu? There is much to give thanks to God everyday, even if it has been years from Him saving you from your old life and giving you the new!
