Parable Series: The Weeds

Matthew 13:24-30

Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field.  But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. 26 When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.

“The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’

“‘An enemy did this,’ he replied.

“The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’

“‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them.  Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’”

Reflection

The wheat in the parable looked like the weeds. The only way the servants knew they were weeds was that they didn’t produce good fruit. The owner told them to leave the weeds alone. It was his job to allocate where the wheat and weeds went at the time of the harvest.

Weeds are everywhere. They are in the church. They are made up of church members that look like other church members who love God, but they lack the transformative work of the Holy Spirit. Still, it is our job to love the weed, and not try to separate the weeds from our church, jobs, or even the home. That is Father God’s job.

Has this changed your approach towards people in your social circles that you might have suspected as counterfeit Christians? How can you show love for them while waiting on the Lord Jesus Christ to sanctify them, or remove them?
